Why Diamonds Are Special

Diamonds, diamonds, diamonds, are they a girl’s best friend?

A gesture of love?  A statement of success?  Or just something pretty?

They can be whatever you want them to be, but what exactly is a diamond? A diamond is basically a very hard transparent precious stone of pure crystallised carbon. Yes that is it.

Why are they so special?

  • Carbon is the fundamental element to all life on earth and a diamond is the purest, most concentrated form of it.

There is no other mineral on the whole of this earth that is as hard or transparent as a diamond.

There are only two places where diamonds can form that we know of, and these areas require very specific temperatures and pressures which is part of what makes them so precious.

They are the absolute ‘king of gems’ and the only substance that can harm or scratch a diamond is another diamond.

The term ‘diamond’ comes from the Greek ‘adamas’ meaning, ‘invincible’ ‘unalterable’ ‘unbreakable’.

If you have any queries, questions or just a general pondering, it’s as simple as asking.

I will leave you with tip number One for diamond selection which is easy to remember:

The 4 C’s. Ask to see the difference with each diamond you view so that you can compare.

  1. Carat –    the weight of the diamond
  2. Clarity -  the purity of the diamond (the less inclusions/birthmarks the better)
  3. Colour –  A white Diamond is measured by how colourless it is
  4. Cut -       How perfectly the Diamond has been crafted

More tips will be coming your way with each future blog.

The quote I will leave you with is perhaps the most classic of all:

“Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”

as sung by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’. These famous lyrics were written by Jule Styne.
